The Ministry of Supportive Services

Every church stands in need of a positive flow of communications as well as a system of assistance. The objective of this ministry is to inform the members of Union Hill of events in the church and community, as it relates to the elderly, the young, and the social arena. In essence, this ministry will open channels of communications to those in the Church and surrounding areas who are in need of our services.

This ministry's role is to keep the Church abreast of various functions that have happened and will happen within the realm of Union Hill as well as those community projects which reflect the Church in some manner. To accomplish this task a church newspaper, "The Chronicle," is issued monthly.

This ministry is designed for the sole purpose of developing and implementing a drug education, prevention and intervention program as a part of the total church program aimed at addressing the whole of man.

The media service perhaps best captures the operations of a support system. Its aim is to provide communication measures to the Church and its shut-in members via mass communication technology; video recordings, tape recordings, and the like.

This branch of supportive services aids in the care of those little ones who cannot care for themselves. Its services are extended not only to children of church members, but to those of non church members as well. The regular schedule for the Nursery unit is each Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. Care givers arrive on duty at 10:00 a.m. Children are expected to arrive no later than 11:00 a.m. The Nursery is also open for other church-wide activities when deemed necessary.

There are multifaceted roles in which the Ministry for Social Change undertakes. One such role is to keep the Church aware of the prevailing social issues that will affect the Church (members) directly or indirectly. More importantly, it urges the Church to take a position on issues in view of Christian doctrine and spiritual guidance. At various times during the year this unit conducts voter registration drives, and sponsors a Black History program the 3rd Sunday in February.

This ministry is designed for the sole purpose of aiding and assisting the elderly and the poor in the Church and the community. Its mission is to function as a liaison between the diverse agencies responsible for providing assistance to the poor and the aging.

The mission of this ministry is to be of service to the congregational members and guests before, during, and after services and to assist in maintaining a worshipful atmosphere in the Church. The following usher groups are:

FoodSource is a self-help and resource exchange program dedicated to providing a quality, supplemental food package to those willing to help themselves. FoodSource is for all people and is a partnership of the total community. Host organizations such as churches, civic group, volunteer fire departments, housing authority groups and many others assist in registering participants and distributing food. The cost of the 18 item food package is $14.00 plus $1.00 for transportation.
